Mingly.ai ("Mingly," "we," "us") helps career-oriented professionals meet compatible people and build a social life outside of work. This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. We've tried to write it in plain language. If anything is unclear, email privacy@mingly.ai.
The short version: we don't sell your data, we don't show ads, every profile detail has its own privacy switches, and you can delete your account - and everything in it - at any time from Settings.
What we collect
From LinkedIn, when you sign in. We use "Sign In with LinkedIn using OpenID Connect." LinkedIn shares your name, email address, profile photo, and an account identifier. We keep our own copy of your profile photo. We don't access your LinkedIn connections, posts, or messages, and we never post anything to LinkedIn.
What you add to your profile. For example: your work and career (role, industry, company, career stage), education, languages, the cities you spend time in and how far you're willing to travel, pets, interests and activities, lifestyle and social preferences, an "About you" section, and photos. Almost all of this is optional.
What you choose to share with matches. If you choose, a LinkedIn profile link, phone number, and/or Instagram handle, shown only to your current matches.
Your phone number, if you add one. You can add a mobile number in Settings and confirm it with a code we text you. It's optional and never shown to anyone on Mingly. If you turn on "Let people who have my number find me," people who have your number in their phone contacts will be able to find you on Mingly (through our phone app) - they still won't see your number.
What you do on Mingly. Who you Connect with, pass on, or save for later; your matches; your circle and the invites you send or accept; messages you send; events you mark as interesting and who you choose to share that with; introductions you ask for, make, or answer; people you block; reports you make; and your settings.
Technical information. Our servers record basic request information - such as your IP address, browser type, and the time and page of each request - to run the service, keep it secure, and fix problems. We use a single sign-in cookie to keep you logged in. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies, and we don't track you across other websites.
What we don't collect. We don't use your device's GPS or precise location - your location is the city you pick. We don't read your phone contacts.
If you join the waitlist. During the private beta, signing in without an invite or beta code puts you on a waitlist. We keep only what LinkedIn shared at sign-in so we can let you in and email you when your spot is ready; you're not visible to anyone, and you can remove yourself from the waitlist page at any time, which deletes your sign-up.
How we use it
- To run your account and keep you signed in
- To suggest compatible people and explain why they might be a good fit
- To run Matches, Messages, and your Circle
- To send emails about your own activity (a new match, someone joining your circle, a new conversation) - you can turn these off in Settings
- To send a weekly summary email (new people suggested for you, things waiting on you, and upcoming events near you) - only when there's something new, never including the text of your messages, and you can turn it off in Settings or with the unsubscribe link in every email
- To keep Mingly safe: enforcing blocks, reviewing reports, and acting on accounts that break our Terms
- To keep the service working and secure, and to improve it
We do not sell your personal data. We don't use it for advertising, and we don't let advertisers target you.
Who can see what
Your profile. Every detail on your profile has two separate switches: whether other people can see it, and whether it can be used for matching. A detail you hide is never shown or named to anyone, even when it helps your matches. Other members see your first name, not your last name - with two exceptions: people in your circle (people you've both agreed to add) also see your last name, and your current matches see its first letter ("Maya C."), unless you turn that off in Settings ("Show my last name to my circle and initial to my matches"). Friends of friends and people in Discover never see any of it, and neither do our emails (unless you choose to share your LinkedIn profile with a match).
Your circle. People in your circle can see you're connected. If "Show me as a mutual friend" is on (it is by default), people your friends meet on Mingly may see you named - for example, "You both know Maya." Turn it off in Settings and you'll still help your friends' matches without being named.
Matches. Contact details you choose to share are visible only to your current matches, and disappear if either of you unmatches.
Feedback. During the beta, the Feedback button lets you send us a rating, a note and, if you choose, a screenshot. We record the page you were on and your browser type with it. Only the Mingly team sees feedback; screenshots are stored privately (not as public photos) with their photo metadata removed. Feedback is deleted when you delete your account.
Keeping your circle organized. On My Circle you can star favorites, sort people into your own named groups, and unfollow someone (you stop seeing the events they share; you stay in each other's circle and can still message). All of this is private to you - nobody is told, and groups are never shown to anyone. Each person in your circle also shows how many friends you have in common - a number only, never names. When someone leaves your circle, your favorite, unfollow and group settings for them are deleted.
Messages. Messages you send are visible only to you and the person you're talking to. You can message people you've matched with and people in your circle. If either of you unmatches, leaves the other's circle, or blocks the other, the conversation closes and its history is hidden from both of you. Messages are stored on our servers so we can deliver them; the Mingly team does not read conversations except where needed to investigate a safety report or to comply with the law. Email notifications about messages never include the message itself.
Events. Marking that you're interested in an event is private. For each event, you can choose to share it - with specific people from your matches and circle, your circle, your circle and their friends, or every Mingly member - and you can leave specific people out. Whoever you share with sees your first name and photo on that event. Nothing is shared unless you choose it, and people you've blocked (or who've blocked you) never see it. If you and another member are both interested in the same upcoming event and each chose to share that with the other, it can help you match, and your introduction may mention it ("You're both interested in..."). Interest you keep private, or that only one of you shared, is never used for matching or mentioned. Our team sees only how many people are interested in an event, not who.
Introductions. A friend in your circle can introduce you to someone in theirs - because one of you asked, or on their own. When they do, you both see their note, your first names and photos, and what you have in common - only things you both show on your profiles, and events only if you both shared them with each other and with that friend. If you ask a friend for an introduction, the other person isn't told unless your friend actually introduces you; if your friend chooses "Not now", you aren't told. You can turn introductions off in Settings ("Let friends introduce me"), and nobody is told you did.
Venue partners. Some events come from local businesses we partner with, labelled "Partner." Partners never see who is interested in their events, who views them, or anything else about you - only what any visitor to their own website would know. If a business applies to be a partner, we keep the contact details it gives us only to review the application and run the partnership.
Blocks and reports. The person you block isn't told. The person you report isn't told who reported them.
The Mingly team. A small number of authorized team members can access account information when needed to run the service, review a report, or respond to your request. Every moderation action is recorded.
Who we share it with
We share personal data only with service providers that help us run Mingly, and only for that purpose:
- Hosting: Hetzner Online, whose data centers store our servers and backups. Your data is stored in Helsinki, Finland (European Union).
- Sign-in: LinkedIn, when you choose to sign in with it.
- Email delivery: a provider that sends our notification emails, when you have them turned on.
- Text messages: Twilio, which sends the code that confirms your phone number when you add one. It receives your number and the text it delivers.
- City search: when you type a city, the search text is sent from our servers to Photon, an OpenStreetMap-based geocoding service. It isn't linked to you.
- Fonts: our pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google's servers, which see your IP address.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect someone's safety, or as part of a merger or acquisition (in which case this policy would continue to apply to your data). We never share your data with third parties for their own marketing.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account at any time from Settings. When you do, we immediately delete your profile, photos, matches, circle, messages, and everything else in your account from our systems. Conversations are deleted for both people. Backup copies, kept so we can recover from an outage, are deleted on a rolling basis within 14 days, and backup snapshots at our storage provider may persist for up to a further 14 days. We may keep limited records longer where reasonably necessary for legal, safety, or fraud-prevention reasons - for example, a report made against an account.
Your choices and rights
- Edit or hide any profile detail, and choose what's used for matching, at any time.
- Turn off notification emails, the weekly summary email, and being named as a mutual friend in Settings.
- Add or remove your phone number, and turn "find me by my number" on or off, in Settings.
- Block anyone, and see or undo your blocks in Settings.
- Delete your account from Settings.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete it, by emailing privacy@mingly.ai. Depending on where you live (for example, California or the European Union), you may have additional rights under local law, including the right to complain to a data protection authority. We'll respond within 30 days and won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.
Security
We protect your data with encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure sign-in sessions, privacy rules enforced on our servers rather than just in the app, restricted access for our team, and backups readable only by authorized administrators. No system is perfectly secure, but we take protecting your information seriously and will notify you and the relevant authorities of a breach as required by law.
Age requirement
Mingly is only for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 18; if we learn we have, we'll delete the account.
Changes to this policy
If we make meaningful changes, we'll update the date above and let you know in the app or by email before they take effect.
